The next genaration Linux distribution from Red Hat

Fedora is now available from Red Hat and at distinguished mirror sites near you, and is also available in the torrent.

Fedora has expanded in this release to four binary ISO images and four source ISO images, and is available for both x86-64 and i386 and also PPC machines.

The Fedora Project is a Red-Hat-sponsored and community-supported open source project. It is also a proving ground for new technology that may eventually make its way into Red Hat products. It is not a supported product of Red Hat, Inc.

The goal of The Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from free software. Development will be done in a public forum. The project will produce time-based releases of Fedora Core about 2-3 times a year with a public release schedule.

· This time TEENpup has grown to just under 700MB so that it will fit on a CD. As the focus for TEENpup has shifted to a Modern Operating System for older PCs which most likely only came with a CD Drive, it was felt that a 700MB size limit should be adhere to.

· Also to attract users from Windows TEENpup default color scheme has been modeled on some of Vista's coloring. Also the way the menu Applications are worded might seem too simplistic for the average Linux User. It was felt that to win over new users; TEENpup's Applications had to be as easy to access as was possible. To someone new to Linux and coming across for example Applications called GIMP, ROX , GAMBAS, KAFFEINE to name a few, might be put off even opening them and it was felt that what an Application did was more important than its name.

· So this now leads me to some of the Applications included in this release. It was felt that Open Office should be included with its Help Manual as well as being the latest version at time of release ( 3.1 ) as a large number of users, use a PC for Writing, Spreadsheets and Presentations and anything less wouldn't do. KDE's similar Office Applications have been removed. A number of new KDE Applications have been added. Also Pdrive's USB auto mount daemon has been turned on by default, detecting most USB devices that are plugged in. A lot of time has been spent fine tuning little details that make it easier for the average user to use TEENpup.

· Example: Seamonkey will recognize most common attachments in emails and open them when you click on them. No more searching through "bin" folders for the executables, which wouldn't be a hard thing to do for a seasoned Linux user where as a Linux Newbie would fine it almost impossible.

· Those familiar with some of the Applications included in this release will find them to be an older version than is currently available, why? Well the main reasons are because their smaller, have less dependency and due to these reasons run faster on old Hardware and finally I can fit more of them in the iso. Some users will feel I left out an Application which they felt should have been in TEENpup, well a lot of testing of different Applications was done over the last 15 months and for one reason or another it was decided to leave that Application out.

· To those trying this release of TEENpup, I hope you find it modern, useful, reliable and most of all user friendly. Enjoy!

ClarkConnect 4.3, a specialist server and gateway distribution based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, has been released: "ClarkConnect Server and Gateway Community edition 4.3 is now available.

What's new? The Office edition and Enterprise edition products have now merged! Unlimited mailboxes are now included in the Enterprise edition and this includes full groupware support.

The full list of changes is available in the developer change log -- highlights include: Groupware support in webmail, OpenVPN for road warriors, system processes viewer, mail queue manager, RAID manager, default security keys for users, remote backup (beta).

Kuliax adalah sebuah distribusi Linux untuk pendidikan di Universitas, khususnya Program Studi Teknologi Informasi (TI) atau yang berhubungan seperti Teknik Elektro (TE) konsentrasi Sistem Komputer dan Informatika, Teknik Informatika (TF), Ilmu Komputer (IK), dan lain-lain. Walaupun begitu, distro ini dapat digunakan pula pada Program Studi/Jurusan lain yang membutuhkan perangkat lunak untuk melakukan komputasi seperti Statistik dengan R-base, Pemodelan dengan Octave, dan lain-lain. Versi ini merupakan hasil usaha survei yang cukup mendalam dan penyesuaian dengan kurikulum/silabus Program Studi Teknologi Informasi.

Kuliax merupakan implementasi pertama dari rencana Kuliax Project, sebuah proyek untuk membawa Linux dan Perangkat Lunak Bebas dan Open Source (PLBOS) ke dunia pendidikan di Universitas. Diharapkan distro ini bisa menjadi dasar bagi pengembangan-pengembangan selanjutnya baik teknis seperti distro untuk tiap Program Studi/Jurusan atau aplikasi pendidikan, dan non teknis seperti pembuatan dokumentasi, pameran, seminar, workshop, dst.

Menjalankan Kuliax 6.0

Is Linux Mint suitable for individuals?

Yes, definitely. We believe Linux is the best operating system on the market. There are more than 300 active Linux distributions and we're working hard at becoming the best alternative for your desktop. This is a tough competition as there are other great desktop operating systems and distributions out there. We have faith in the quality of our desktop and a lot of great ideas. If your computer is a PC and you have more than 512MB RAM you should try Linux Mint and see what you think about it. Why is there a Light Edition and a Full Edition?

Linux Mint respects the GPL and it also respects the copyrights and licenses of the proprietary software it distributes. However it uses technologies that have been patented in some parts of the World. Most countries do not recognize the legitimacy of software patents so for most of our users this is not a problem. But if you're unlucky and you live in a country where software patents are legally enforcable, you need a version of Linux Mint which is free of patented technologies, and this is what the Light Edition is about.

Why does Linux Mint include proprietary drivers?

It doesn't. If it did, it would be legally wrong (because it would violate the GPL) or ethically wrong (if some dirty trick was used for the user to link the code to the kernel for instance).

What about proprietary software?

We believe in open source and release all our work with the corresponding source code. We owe a lot to the Free Software movement and to the GPL but we also owe a lot to all the developers who contributed ideas and tools and who made software better and better throughout the years. Some of them released their source code as well and thus granted us more freedom and more flexibility. Others released their software with proprietary licenses and although this didn't give us the freedom we would have liked it still contributed to make software better. We like Software in general, Free Software even more, but we do not believe in boycotting Proprietary Software.

GoboLinux is a Linux distribution created in 2002 which implements an innovative approach in terms of system administration. It defines a new directory hierarchy which allows the coherent management of the installed base of programs from a system. This is done exclusively through the filesystem layout, without relying on databases or package managers.

In GoboLinux you don't need a package manager because the filesystem is the package manager. Each program resides in its own directory, such as /Programs/Xorg/7.2 and /Programs/KDE/3.5.8. Each file category (executables, libraries, headers) can also be accessed through unified symlink views, such as /System/Links/Libraries and /System/Links/Headers. These views match the legacy directories (/bin, /usr/include, /usr/local/share, and so on), achieving total Unix compatibility while keeping program directories completely self-contained.

Live CD

The GoboLinux CD serves both as an installation disc and a Live CD, with a complete graphical desktop featuring KDE 3.5.8, OpenOffice.org 2.3.1 and a host of applications. In fact, due to the modular nature of the GoboLinux filesystem, every program available in the CD can be used directly from the "live" environment -- the work of the installer is to simply copy the user's selection to the destination partition (respecting dependency chains).

Graphical installer

Since version 010, GoboLinux features an installer that works on both text and graphical mode. The feature set of both modes is identical, thanks to the innovative AbsTK (Abstract Toolkit), created by the GoboLinux team especially for this installer: a unified widget toolkit for Python which detects and adapts itself for different environments. It currently supports two backends: ncurses/console and Qt/X11.

Hardware detection

GoboLinux features a Udev-based hardware detection system. A large number of devices are detected, loading the appropriate kernel modules. Video detection is performed separately, by Xorg's own autodetection mechanism. If for any reason video card detection fails while booting the Live CD, you can skip to the default, "vesa", which works for most cards (unaccelerated).

Video and peripherals

Video cards are supported through the Xorg X11 server, with the fallback "vesa" driver covering the vast majority of current cards. A large number of sound cards are supported through ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) and OSS (Open Sound System). Other peripherals are supported through additional packages (SANE, GPhoto, etc.) available in the GoboLinux repository and recipe store.

* The aim of this project is to develop a new alternative / blindfriendly live-CD / installer for people with visual impairments. The current release is based on the Ubuntu Linux distribution.
* VINUX (Vinux Is Not Ubuntu but gnu/linuX) is a remaster of the Intrepid Ibex live CD optimised for the needs of blind and partially sighted users!
* It is designed to boot from a live CD or USB memory stick, with autodetecting and starting up your USB braille-display, log you in automatically and then start up the Orca screen-reader.
* You can use VINUX as a portable operating system or you can install it to your hard drive either alongside or as a replacement for Windows.
* In order to fit all of the accessibility settings on the CD I have had to remove some applications including: The GIMP graphical image manipulation program, the F-Spot photo-manager and the Ekiga voice over IP package. You can easily reinstall these and many more open-source applications if you choose to install it on your hard-drive.
* Full-screen magnification can be activated with a simple keystroke!
* I have set up a VINUX Development Blog at http://vinux-development.blogspot.com/ for anyone who is interested! I will use this to document the development of VINUX and any relevant issues so that anyone who wants to create their own accessible remix of Ubuntu, or just modify their existing installation can do so easily. There is an RSS feed available if anyone wants to be automatically notified of new posts. I will still post any significant announcements such as the release of new versions and/or notable improvements on the mailing lists and forums, as well as continuing to asking for help, advice and suggestions and providing them when I can. Seperti pada penerbitan update regular, Kubuntu 9.04 kali ini ditetapkan akan menerima dukungan perbaikan Patches dan Updates selama 18 bulan kedepan. Jaunty Jackalope mengemas Kernel 2.6.28.9, X-Server 1.6 dan mendukung sistem berkas ext4 file system.

Kubuntu menggunakan KDE 4.2.2 sebagai desktopnya. Sebagai pendukung aplikasi perkantoran dikemas versi OpenOffice 3.0.1 dan Evolution yang telah ditingkatkan. Gnotifier, yaitu sistem notifikasi telah diperbaiki dan kini tidak lagi mengganggu pengguna dengan pemberitahuan yang tidak diinginkan.

Berita baik bagi pengguna grafis adalah tersedianya dukungan terhadap tablet Wacom untuk input sketsa. Perangkat ini diklaim langsung dapat dikenali (plug n play) dan enable saat diinstalasi.

Dukungan Mandriva Linux 2009 untuk chipset grafis G41 keluaran Intel tidak dilupakan, dan memperbaiki driver untuk ATI dan Nvidia agar ia mampu mendukung chipset generasi terkini. Theme 'Ia Ora' yang merupakan tampilan khas Mandriva, kini diterapkan untuk KDE 4.

Versi Kernel yang dikemas adalah 2.6.27, dan Firefox 2 diganti dengan Firefox 3. DrakX juga ditingkatkan dengan penambahan beberapa fungsi baru. Sofware utama yang diperbaharui termasuk X.org 7.3, KDE 4.1.2 dan 3.5.10, GNOME 2.24, OpenOffice.org 3.0, PulseAudio dan banyak lainnya.

The Debian Project is pleased to announce the official release of Debian GNU/Linux version 5.0 (codenamed Lenny) after 22 months of constant development. Debian GNU/Linux is a free operating system which supports a total of twelve processor architectures and includes the KDE, GNOME, Xfce, and LXDE desktop environments. It also features compatibility with the FHS v2.3 and software developed for version 3.2 of the LSB.

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 Lenny adds support for Marvell's Orion platform which is used in many storage devices. Supported storage devices include the QNAP Turbo Station series, HP Media Vault mv2120, and Buffalo Kurobox Pro. Additionally, Lenny now supports several Netbooks, in particular the Eee PC by Asus. Lenny also contains the build tools for Emdebian which allow Debian source packages to be cross-built and shrunk to suit embedded ARM systems.

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 Lenny includes the new ARM EABI port, armel. This new port provides a more efficient use of both modern and future ARM processors. As a result, the old ARM port (arm) has now been deprecated.

This release includes numerous updated software packages, such as the K Desktop Environment 3.5.10 (KDE), an updated version of the GNOME desktop environment 2.22.2, the Xfce 4.4.2 desktop environment, LXDE 0.3.2.1, the GNUstep desktop 7.3, X.Org 7.3, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1, GIMP 2.4.7, Iceweasel 3.0.6 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Firefox), Icedove 2.0.0.19 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Thunderbird), PostgreSQL 8.3.6, MySQL 5.0.51a, GNU Compiler Collection 4.3.2, Linux kernel version 2.6.26, Apache 2.2.9, Samba 3.2.5, Python 2.5.2 and 2.4.6, Perl 5.10.0, PHP 5.2.6, Asterisk 1.4.21.2, Emacs 22, Inkscape 0.46, Nagios 3.06, Xen Hypervisor 3.2.1 (dom0 as well as domU support), OpenJDK 6b11, and more than 23,000 other ready-to-use software packages (built from over 12,000 source packages).

With the integration of X.Org 7.3 the X server autoconfigures itself with most hardware. Newly introduced packages allow the full support of NTFS filesystems and the use of most multimedia keys out of the box. Support for Adobe® Flash® format files is available via the swfdec or Gnash plugins. Overall improvements for notebooks have been introduced, such as out of the box support of CPU frequency scaling. For leisure time several new games have been added, including puzzle games as well as first-person shooters. Also notable is the introduction of goplay, a graphical games browser offering filters, search, screenshots and descriptions for games in Debian.

The availability and updates of OpenJDK, GNU Java compiler, GNU Java bytecode interpreter, Classpath and other free versions of Sun's Java technology, into Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 allow us to ship Java-based applications in Debian's main repository.

Further improvements in system security include the installation of available security updates before the first reboot by the Debian Installer, the reduction of setuid root binaries and open ports in the standard installation, and the use of GCC hardening features in the builds of several security-critical packages. Various applications have specific improvements, too. PHP for example is now built with the Suhosin hardening patch.

For non-native English speaking users the package management systems now support translated package descriptions and will automatically show the description of a package in the native language of the user, if available.

Debian GNU/Linux can be installed from various installation media such as DVDs, CDs, USB sticks and floppies, or from the network. GNOME is the default desktop environment and is contained on the first CD. Other desktop environments — KDE, Xfce, or LXDE — can be installed through two new alternative CD images. Again available with Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 are multi-arch CDs and DVDs supporting installation of multiple architectures from a single disc; and this release adds Blu-ray Discs, allowing the archive for an entire architecture to be shipped on a single BD.

In addition to the regular installation media, Debian GNU/Linux can now also be directly used without prior installation. The special images used, known as live images, are available for CDs, USB sticks, and netboot setups. Initially, these are provided for the amd64 and i386 architectures only.

The installation process for Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 has been improved in many ways: among many other improvements, support for installation from more than one CD or DVD has been restored, firmware required by some devices can be loaded by using removable media, and installations via Braille display are supported. The installer boot process has also received much attention: a graphical menu can be used to choose front-ends and desktop environments, and to select expert or rescue mode. The installation system for Debian GNU/Linux has now been translated to 63 languages.

Debian GNU/Linux can be downloaded right now via bittorrent (the recommended way), jigdo or HTTP; see Debian GNU/Linux on CDs for further information. It will soon be available on DVD, CD-ROM and Blu-ray Disc from numerous vendors, too.

Upgrades to Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 from the previous release, Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (codenamed Etch) are automatically handled by the aptitude package management tool for most configurations, and to a certain degree also by the apt-get package management tool. As always, Debian GNU/Linux systems can be upgraded painlessly, in place, without any forced downtime, but it is strongly recommended to read the release notes for possible issues, and for detailed instructions on installing and upgrading. The release notes will be further improved and translated to additional languages in the weeks after the release.

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 Lenny is dedicated to Thiemo Seufer, a Debian Developer who died on December 26th, 2008 in a tragic car accident. Thiemo was involved in Debian in many ways. He has maintained several packages and was the main supporter of the Debian port to the MIPS architectures. He was also a member of our kernel team, as well as a member of the Debian Installer team. His contributions reached far beyond the Debian project. He also worked on the MIPS port of the Linux kernel, the MIPS emulation of qemu, and far too many smaller projects to be named here.

GNOME

openSUSE 11.1 dengan lingkungan desktop GNOME menggunakan versi 2.24.1 yang dirilis bulan September lalu dengan sejumlah fitur yang ditingkatkan seperti untuk Empathy instant messaging client dan Nautilus file manager yang mendukung tab untuk file browsing dan tampilan yang lebih kompak.

Lebih dari itu openSUSE telah melakukan kutomisasi yang membuat ia tidak sekedar tampil beda daripada GNOME lainnya, melainkan untuk penyesuaian useabiliti terhadap komponen-komponen lainnya. Konfigurasi default misalnya tidak lagi menampilkan top panel, sementara ia mengganti panel menu regular dengan menu ala Novell Slab yang dibuat berdasarkan hasil riset useabiliti desktop dilakukan Novell sebalumnya.

Aplikasi GNOME yang dikemas di edisi openSUSE ini adalah termasuk Banshee 1.4 yang baru dirilis dan menyediakan fitur menarik seperti pengelola device baru dengan plug-in API yang memungkinkan pengembang untuk mengadopsi dukungan sinkronisasi misalnya untuk T-Mobile's Android-based G1. KDE

KDE 4 yang di includkan suda menyertakan banyak improvisasi baru dari openSUSE 11.0. di release terbaru ini anda bisa menemukan KDE-PIM suite back in KDE 4, games baru, KSCD CD player, KSystemLog to keep track of system changes, improvements to Dolphin, Konqueror, dan Marble integration dengan OpenStreetMap. KDE sudah menjadi standardized di PackageKit untuk backend

Bila menginstalasi menggunakan veri DVD, tersedia opsi untuk menggunakan versi KDE 3.5 legacy dari generasi sebelumnya.

openSUSE 11.1 terpasang kernel Linux versi 2.6.27 yang telah mendukung driver nirkabel ath9k dan pengingkatan dalam hal kompatibilitas terhadap perangkat webcam. Ia juga menyertakan versi terkini penelusur web Firefox 3.0.4.

Bagi para pengembang, openSUSE 11.1 telah menyertakan Python 2.6 dan Mono 2.0. Kedua lingkungan bahasa pemrograman ini masing-masing telah ditingkatkan signifikan. Kiwi uses the same software repositories as Ubuntu with one additional source added for the handful of artwork related or slightly modified packages. Hence it is easy to switch to and from Ubuntu and all the security and bugfix updates from Ubuntu are getting into Kiwi automatically.

The packages are hosted and built in the Kiwilinux team's Launchpad PPA. The main archive is a mirrored and GPG-signed copy of this and can be enabled by adding this line to your apt sources: deb http://kiwilinux.org/archive intrepid main. Medibuntu repositories are enabled by default as well.

ReactOS adalah sebuah sistem operasi opensource yang berbasis GNU license dan memiliki tampilan yang mirip sekali dengan Windows NT pada interfacenya. Meskipun begitu, pihak pengembang menolak kalau ReactOS ini merupakan cloning dari Windows, mereka menyatakan bahwa OS ciptaan mereka ini benar-benar murni merupakan OS baru, dan bukan keturunan dari Windows ataupun Linux.

Bukan hanya penampilan tapi aplikasi, game dan driver-driver under windows juga bisa jalan di OS ini.

Mandriva Linux 2009 secara teknis membawa banyak perbaikan dan peningkatan dibandingkan versi 2008 sebelumnya.

Perubahan terpenting adalah peningkatan kecepatan proses boot, dukungan lebih baik terhadap NetBooks serta mengganti bootsplash dengan Splashy untuk penampilan grafis saat booting.
Driver ath5k menggantikan madwifi guna mendukung kartu WLAN yang pada umumnya menggunakan Atheros.

Driver baru ini disebutkan memiliki kelebihan yaitu sepenuhnya menggunakan kode pemrograman HAL yang berlisensi bebas, sementara madwifi masih merupakan program proprietari.
